A social story provides a social learning tool for people of all ages with additional needs, learning difficulties and those on the Autism Spectrum. They are short descriptions of a particular situation, event or activity, which include specific information about what to expect in that situation and why.
The initiative expands on the current resources available, such as sensory places, sensory toys and quiet time, and plays a role in making County Tipperary an autism friendly place. Click on the text below to view or download:
The Booktastic Book Club is a group of book lovers – Kim, Susan, Carol, Elaine, Nicola, Laoise, Martin and Kevin – who love to share their thoughts and impressions of books that they have read. To read a review just click on the tab!
Hi Book lovers it’s Kim, Susan, Carol, Elaine, Nicola, Laoise, Martin and Kevin from the “BookTastic Book Club” and this month we are reviewing the truly remarkable story of Helen Keller and her amazing Teacher Anne Sullivan.
This book is part of the “Little People Big Dreams” series and is wrote by Isabel Sanchez Vegara and beautifully illustrated by Sam Rudd.
Be prepared to be astounded when you read this book which tells the story of Helen Keller who at a very young age developed a visual and hearing impairment following a terrible illness.
Because Helen could no longer communicate with her family and friends this made her very frustrated and angry. Helen’s family looked for help and were introduced to Anne Sullivan a teacher from The Perkins Institute for the Blind.
Anne showed Helen how to communicate in other ways. Soon Helen was reading books using a system called braille and before long she was writing her own books.
Helen went on to become the first person with a visual and hearing impairment to gain a university degree. Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan travelled all around the country together to share their amazing story and to advocate and be a voice for people with disabilities.
We hope you enjoy our book review. We highly recommend reading this book as it will definitely inspire you to follow your dreams no matter what obstacles you meet along the way!!!
We hope you enjoyed our book review and we look forward to doing the next one.
This book series has over 70 books to enjoy and all of them help us to learn about the lives of amazing people that have achieved “Big Dreams”.
We chose Florence Nightingale as we had heard of her but we wanted to know all about her and how she became the “Mother of Modern Nursing”.
The book tracks Florence Nightingales life from when she was a little girl in Florence -where she dreamed of helping people who were ill- all the way up to describing her extraordinary work in the hospital helping injured soldiers during the Crimean War where she was known as “The Lady of The Lamp”.
We would definitely recommend reading this book as it is very informative, educational and easy to read with lovely illustrations.
This book does a wonderful job showcasing how Florence Nightingale was an amazing woman who dedicated her life to helping others and the way in which she transformed health care forever.
We intend to read more books from this series and we will give a review on each of them.
Hi Book lovers it’s Kim, Susan, Carol, Elaine, Nicola, Laoise, Martin and Kevin from the “BookTastic Book Club” and this month we are reviewing the book “Elvis Presley” which is part of the “Little People Big Dreams” series and is wrote by Isabel Sanchez Vegara and beautifully illustrated by Ana Albero.
For all you music lovers out there this book will be a treat for you as it follows the life of Elvis from when he was a baby born into a poor family in North Mississippi all the way up to his meteoric rise to stardom and fame and how he became known as the “King of Rock N’ Roll”.
When Elvis was a child racism was widespread in his home country and that people were separated according to the colour of their skin but this book tells us that “For Elvis Music had no Colour” and he loved listening to his neighbours singing the blues.
Listening to different types of music such as Country, Pop, Blues and Gospel inspired Elvis to create his own unique sound know as “Rock N’ Roll” and although most people loved this new form of music it made some people angry and they were scandalised by his hip shaking when he performed on stage!!!
This book has loads of interesting facts about Elvis’s life and there are some lovely photos of him at the back of the book. Through reading this book we learned that Elvis was one of the greatest performers ever known and that he still remains one of the biggest artists of all time.
We highly recommend that you read this book as we absolutely loved it.
We hope you enjoyed our book review and in the words of Elvis “Thank you, Thank you very much”.
