On Tuesday last, as part of National Bioeconomy Week, (14th – 24th October), Nenagh library was delighted to welcome Naveen Kumar and Gavin Moroney, European Project Managers at the Irish Bioeconomy Foundation, to speak on the Irish bioeconomy and blue economy.
In a presentation entitled ‘Report on the Irish Bioeconomy with a Focus on Blue Bioeconomy and Key Initiatives,’ Naveen spoke to approx. fifty 5th & 6th year Agricultural Science students, giving them an overview of the Irish Bioeconomy and Blue Bioeconomy. Looking initially at the Irish Bioeconomy landscape, Naveen then spoke about the bioeconomy in Ireland in comparison to other countries and the fact that we trail many of these countries like the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany in developing this part of our economy. He discussed various government initiatives and projects already underway that will enable Ireland to embrace sustainability, making it economically viable so that eventually it becomes part of our culture. He spoke also of the initiatives carried out by private individuals and companies as part of their commitment to sustainability before looking forward to the future of the Bioeconomy in Ireland.
Both he and Gavin then took questions from their young audience, for whom the bioeconomy will be a part and parcel of their life, many of whom may well find themselves working in this sector or related fields in the future.
