Have you heard of the “My Little Library Book Bag” initiative? It is a campaign focussed on building strong links between young children, their families and their local library. Like so much else in your local library this is a FREE offering wherein children leaving the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) pre-school programme and starting primary school (a.k.a. “Big School” 😀) are invited to visit their local library to pick up a “My Little Library” book bag and take the opportunity to join the library.
Basically, it’s a way to get kids started on a reading journey that will hopefully take them through to adulthood. This initiative has already resulted in tens of thousands of children collecting their book bags and joining the local library. Doing this helps them to discover everything public libraries have to offer and shows what an inclusive, welcoming space the library is.
In addition to this, younger children and their families are also invited to their local library to pick up a bedtime story book to keep. This underscores our commitment to see that every child starting school will receive FREE books this year. And all you have to do is pop into your local branch and sign your child up. We can’t wait to see you there!
